Carolina Gold, The Bechtlers

Carolina Gold, The Bechtlers of Rutherford County, NC, coins 1831-1852.

Christopher Bechtler was a skilled metallurgist (a person who uses the¬†technique or science of working or heating metals so as to give them certain desired shapes or properties. the technique or science of making and compounding alloys. the technique or science of separating metals from their ores.), assisted by his son August and nephew Christopher, operated a private mint in NC and were the main source of the nation’s gold supply from 1790 – 1848 ( California gold strikes 1848).

The Bechtlers minted only 3 denominations in a wide variety of  weights and sizes. The first gold dollar in the United States was produced by the Bechtler boys in the year 1831. The first circulating gold coin struck by the the U.S. Mint was in 1849.

Designed by James Earle Fraser, his initial F is beneath the date. 3 Native Americans were employed to model for the obverse.
The bison model was “Black Diamond” from the New York Central Park Zoo.
The coin is composed of copper & nickel. Minted in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco.
